THE EFFECTIVENESS OF GRADUATED GUIDANCE IN TEACHING LEISURE TIME SKILLS TO CHILDREN WITH AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER

It is known that ¨Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)¨ emerges in the first three years of my life and results from a neurological disorder that is seen with problems in language and communication skills as well as limited interests and repetitive behaviors (Korkmaz, 2003, p. 81). Although the number of children with ASD differs from country to country, it is seen that the number of children with ASD is increasing in all countries (Fombonne, 2002; Cited by: Karaaslan & Karaaslan, 2016). The aim of this study is to determine the effectiveness of teaching with graduated guidance in teaching leisure time skills to children with ASD. Three children (one girl and two boys) aged between 11 and 13 who were diagnosed with ASD were included in the study. In line with the purpose of the research, it was tried to teach children with ASD to play backgammon with graduated guidance. The independent variable of the research is teaching with graduated guidance, and the dependent variable is the level of acquiring the skill of playing backgammon. Multiple probe design with probe conditions across subjects was used to assess the effects of graduated guidance. The findings showed that graduated guidance procedure was effective in teaching three students with ASD the skill of playing backgammon, one of the leisure time skills, and that after the end of the instruction, the children were able to maintain the skills they gained and generalize the acquired skill to different people.
