THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LANGUAGE AND CULTURE IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING

Culture is a highly abstract concept and people attribute various meanings to it. Language and culture are two entities that cannot be discussed in isolation from one another; it can be said that language cannot be understood without referring to culture, and equally that culture cannot be appreciated without language. It has become quite clear nowadays that by means of common and ordinary methods of teaching we cannot reach up to the ideal desired level of language and we need new aspects, techniques and approaches for teaching a language - such as cultural elements. In teaching a foreign language, it is important to take into account all features and requirements to meet the needs of modern language learning and teaching. The aim of this study, on the whole, is to present the important points of how the perspectives of cultural reality affect the learner in foreign-language learning, and to show why culture should be included in language lessons. Language and culture are explained in detail and that there is a special interrelation between language and culture is defined. Therefore, the area of language teaching, naturally and inevitably, needs to become closely integrated with the relationship between the two concepts, and culture must be dealt with where language teaching is concerned.
