THE EFFECTS OF NATURE EDUCATION ON TALENTED STUDENTS’ KNOWLEDGE AND ATTITUDES TOWARD WATER

Water is an essential element of natural life. Especially in recent years, the depletion of clean water resources, the presence of high water pollution, and water scarcity negatively affect the natural life all over the world. In this context, it is necessary to raise the awareness of children especially for the importance of water and its’ protection. For this purpose, nature education was given to talented students within the scope of TUBİTAK 4004 - Nature Education and Science Schools Support Program, and the effect of this education on their knowledge and attitude towards the water was investigated. A 6-day nature education related to water was carried out within the scope of the research, in which 25 talented students participated. In the study in which the quantitative research method was used, Water Concept Test and Water Usage Attitude Scale were applied to the students before and after education. According to Shapiro-Wilk test results, while normal distribution was found for the water usage attitude scale, data obtained from water concept test didn’t show normal distribution. For that reason, Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test, as non-parametric statistical techniques, was used to analyze the data from water concept test, and t-test as parametric statistical techniques to analyze the data from water usage attitude scale. Results of the study have revealed that there is a statistically significant increase between mean scores of the students in pre- and post-test in terms of Water Concept Test (z = -0.052, p<0.05) and Water Usage Attitude Scale (z = -7.508, p<0.05). This study was supported by TÜBİTAK within the scope of the project number 119B912.
